Gregorio Gonzalez - Baritone


“The night’s major discovery” and “Definitely a rising star” is some of the critical acclaim created by Gregorio’s performances. Gregorio recently made his debut at the Nederlandse Opera in I Puritani and La Traviata this year, and has also sung at Amsterdam’s Concert Gebouw in concert versions of Donizetti’s Poliuto and Verdi’s Othello. He has also recently sung in Vienna at Theater an der Wien in Luisa Fernanda, and for Opera de Panamá to celebrate the One Hundred Anniversary of the Teatro Nacional.

Gregorio’s appearances in the U.S. include Lucia di Lammermoor at Virginia Opera; at Opera Theatre of St. Louis, in Street Scene; singing in Luisa Fernanda at Los Angeles Opera, and at their 20th Anniversary Gala Concert celebrated with Plácido Domingo. During his three-season residency at Los Angeles Opera, Gregorio created the roles of Count Obolenski and Avdeev in the World premiere of Nicholas and Alexandra, and also sang in over a dozen productions including La Bohème, Carmen, Romeo et Juliette, Il Barbiere di Siviglia, La Fanciulla del West, Madama Butterfly, and Le Nozze di Figaro. Gregorio has performed throughout the US for other companies such as Connecticut Opera, Des Moines Metro Opera, San Diego Opera, San Diego Comic Opera, Moonlight Amphitheatre, and at the Ojai International Festival under the direction of Maestro Kent Nagano. Gregorio has also performed in his native México for Opera de Tijuana and the Vive La Magia Festival in Guanajuato. He sang the part of Harasta in the BBC’s Spanish and Catalán languages animated film versions of the opera The Cunning Little Vixen by Janacek, which was released on DVD and televised throughout Spain.

On the concert stage, Mr. González has performed various repertory from Handel to Daniel Catán.

Gregorio has been distinguished as a finalist in competitions such as Plácido Domingo’s Operalia World Singer Competition, The Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions, The Francisco Viñas Competition and by winning 1st place at the Gerda Lissner, Violetta Dupont, Palm Springs Opera Guild, La Jolla Symphony and Chorus Young Artists, and Virginia Hawk Competitions. He has received additional awards from The Licia Albanese-Puccini Foundation, The Young Patronesses of the Opera Competition, The Loren L. Zachary Society, The San Diego Musical Merit Foundation, and The Leni FeBland Foundation.

Gregorio has worked with internationally acclaimed conductors such as Kent Nagano, Mstislav Rostropovich, Edoardo Müller, and Nicola Luisotti; and directors such as Collin Graham, Marthe Keller, Robert Wilson, Emilio Sagi and Willy Decker. He has sung onstage with personalities such as Plácido Domingo, Roberto Alagna, Rolando Villazón, Frederica Von Stade, and Anna Netrebko, to name a few.
